Only one month until Christmas! Wow how the time flies. I feel like the year is rushing by so quickly.
We are busily into our practice for our Christmas concert. In case you haven’t heard, we are doing a dance (unless they chose to sing in the choir) and we’ve just started choreographing our routine. The concert takes place on December 17th so clear your calendars!
In Math we are continuing with integers this week, wrapping up with a quiz on Thursday. In LA we are trying like crazy to get through our novel study (The Borrowers) so that we can move on to more Christmassy things. In Social Studies we are working on our short unit on Japan (we’ll wrap it up by Christmas so that we can start a research project after the break). In Science we are continuing on with our unit on Electricity and in HACE we are still working on bullying and ways to deal with it. In PE we are doing some cooperative games in addition to doing our dance (soon enough the gym will be closed with the stage set up, practices etc).
Stay tuned for the introduction of our new online spelling program (called ‘Spelling City). I have asked to purchase a license for our kids and am just waiting for the go ahead……Once it starts, kids will participate in a home study program that has spelling lists that I supply, practice tests, games to help learn the words, sentences with the words in them, and then the actual test.

Well here we are heading into mid November. Our classroom has been deeply affected by the illness that has been swirling around so it has been a difficult time to start new units and projects. I know how tough it has been on kids and parents (and teachers!) to have continuity in programming so let’s hope that the worst is behind us and everyone stays healthy for awhile.
In Math we are going to re-test on divisibility, order of operations and exponents on Thursday (I had said Tuesday previously, forgetting that we have an assembly for Remembrance Day that day) since Wednesday is a day off. In Reading we have been trying to do projects that don’t go too far ahead in the novel but this week we will have to move on and work our way through chapters 6 and 7. For Social Studies we will be starting our unit on Japan. For Science we are moving on to ‘current electricity’ and we do require a ‘D’ battery for some of the experiments. In HACE we continue to look at problem solving through social scenarios on bullying, peer pressure etc. For Writing we are rolling out our ‘Write Traits’ program which focuses on various types of writing.
Monday, Nov. 10 – Moo day, Computer lab at lunch, P.E.
Tuesday, Nov. 10 – Remembrance Day assembly after recess, Boys A @ AEP, Boys B @ GH
Wednesday, Nov 11 – DAY OFF
Thursday, Nov. 12 -Girls A @ OLPH, Girls B @ AH

Well here we are. The start of another month. This year seems to be going by really quickly. Only about 100 days until the Olympics and by then we’ll be halfway through the year. Unbelievable.
This week we were supposed to start a project in Social Studies but, due to a technological glitch, we won’t be able to get going with it until January. What this means is that we’ll be looking at Japan and doing a comparison study for the rest of this term. For Science we are continuing with our unit on Electricity (ask your kids about the fun we had with ’static electricity’ last Friday). In HACE we have been looking at problem solving and decision making. In Language Arts we are continuing on with our novel study, working in our writing program and using ‘Communication Skills’ for grammar and spelling. For Math we have been working away on divisibility rules, exponents and order of operations. There will be a test coming up on Thursday on those three concepts. Check out www.fearexhibit.org (we looked at it last week).
During our electricity unit, a “D” battery is needed for many of the experiments. They will come home again after our experiments (we can label them). Please send one to school with your child a.s.a.p. If you are unable to supply one, let me know right away.
Monday – Moo Day, Computer lab open at lunch for 3
Tuesday – Boys A Volleyball at KB, Boys B at Parkcrest
Wednesday – Moo Day, Computer lab open at lunch for 4
Thursday – Math test, Girls A Volleyball at KCS, Girls B at Parkcrest
Friday – Moo Day
Like usual, you can always reach me at slane@sd73.bc.ca
Upcoming Events:
November 10 – Remembrance Day assembly
November 13 – Photo Re-takes
November 16 – Ms. Lane away
November 17 – Gym closed in PM due to community H1N1 vaccination clinic
November 27 – Report cards go home

Good day everyone! Right off the top I want to let you know that I will not be at school on Monday, Oct. 26. I’m at a workshop (I’m kind of workshop’d out so hopefully this is the last one for awhile).
This week is the lead up to Halloween! Thank goodness it’s on a Saturday this year. Lots of excitement this week as we have a dance on Friday afternoon. Don’t forget to bring your food items for the Food Bank drive this week too.
In Science we are doing Electricity, for Social Studies we are looking at the economy (yikes) and the geography of Canada before starting a project next week (I’ll explain more next week). For HACE we are carrying on with problem solving skills and in French I found out that the kids are making houses and labeling them (you’ll have to ask them for more). In Language Arts we are working on our novel, improving paragraph writing skills and doing a few reading strategies (this will be for the next few weeks so I may not write this again until it changes). For Math we are learning about exponents and then order of operations.
Here’s the week: (Food Bank Drive all week) *NOTE the Halloween Dance will have a concession (drinks and chips for $1.00) and will be selling glow sticks ($2.00)
Monday, Oct 26 – Ms. Lane away, Moo day, P.E.

Here we go! Zipping towards the end of October. Halloween is fast approaching and, since we have a dance on the last Friday afternoon before the 31st, our student council has decided to hold a food bank drive for the week leading up to the dance. I know I’m telling you early but I thought I’d give you a heads up.
Math this week is learning divisibility rules (a natural segue from multiples and factors plus it’s a good lead in for order of operations). No Science this week since Friday is an inservice day. In Social Studies we are carrying on with identifying some unique Canadian characteristics (including culture, gov’t, economy and geography) before beginning to make comparisons with another country (we’ll be doing this for a while so I’ll probably quit writing the same thing every week and let you know when we change topics). In Language Arts we are moving forward with our novel study (The Borrowers). For Fine Arts we are still working on learning the Thriller dance and I can’t wait to do our art project this week (it’s a Halloween one). In P.E. we are beginning volleyball skills and we’ll continue to work on this for quite a while since we’re into the volleyball season. In HACE we are still working on making appropriate decisions and the resulting actions that come out of making those choices.
Here’s what the week looks like:
Monday - P.E., Moo day, Boys A practice at 7:30
Tuesday -Boys A volleyball game @ OLPH
Wednesday – P.E., Moo day
Thursday – Pizza Day, Girls A volleyball @ Parkcrest, Girls B @ AE Perry
Friday – Day off for kids (sadly, I still have to work!)
Have a great week everyone and remember, you can always reach me at slane@sd73.bc.ca

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! I am so full as I am writing this that I am awfully glad for sweatpants and Tums! Here’s what the (shortened) week looks like:
We are working on multiples and factors in Math (again knowing the times tables is a huge help here. We’re also doing a few times table quizzes this week). We will have a test on these concepts on Thursday (including least common factor, greatest common multiple, prime numbers vs composite numbers etc). In Reading we are carrying on with our novel study (The Borrowers). We will be working on chapter 2 this week. For Writing we are focusing still on paragraphs (we could be here a while!). In HACE we have moved from goal setting to decision making and problem solving. For Science we are starting electricity but we will have a quiz on Friday on the scientific method. In Social Studies we are carrying on with our general study of Canada and how we compare to other countries (specifically Japan).
Monday, October 12th - Happy Turkey Day!
Tuesday, October 13th -
Wednesday, October 14th – Moo day, Ground Pounders Run at Dallas,
Thursday, October 15th – Math Test, Class photos (individual ones, not whole class)
Friday, October 16th - Moo day, Science Quiz
Upcoming……… Friday, October 23rd is a Professional Development Day for Teachers, no school for kids
Friday, October 30th there is a Halloween Dance for Intermediate students
As usual, you can reach me anytime at slane@sd73.bc.ca

Hello! Welcome to a new week……Here’s what we’ve been working on so far……..
Science – We’ve been focusing on ‘Scientific Method’ using short science experiments to work through the steps of how to properly conduct an experiment. We’ll be doing a unit on Electricity starting shortly. In Social Studies, we’ve taken a detour and have been looking at Terry Fox until we go back at studying how Japan compares to Canada. For Math, we’ve been reviewing Times Tables (study study study!) because so many math concepts rely on having that basic knowledge mastered. Please remember to tell your parents the rules you’ve learned about multiplication so far…..
In Language Arts, we’ve been starting a novel study (the book is called ‘The Borrowers’). We’ve only done chapter 1 so far but I am reading the book to them and they are following along. For Writing, our focus has been on improving our paragraph writing skills. We are also doing ‘Communication Skills’ which incorporates grammar, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and proper capitalization (among other skills) in one program.
For HACE we have been looking at setting personal and school goals, prioritizing them and identifying ‘blocks’ that could prevent one from attaining their goals. In P.E. we have been doing cooperative games. I have emphasized that gym strip is a hygienic necessity to participate (our gym days are Monday and Wednesday).
Here’s the upcoming week:
Monday - gym day, soccer intramurals
Tuesday – soccer intramurals, book fair
Wednesday - gym day, soccer intramurals, book fair, Groundpounders run at A.S.
Thursday - early closure (dismissal at 12:30), Parent Teacher interviews, book fair
Friday – early closure (dismissal at 12:30), Parent Teacher interviews
P.S. Milk delivery starts next week. Please look for your receipts this week.
Any questions, comments or concerns….please contact me at slane@sd73.bc.ca

I hope you had a happy weekend. We will have class lists up on Tuesday morning. Monday the students will still go back to the same ‘grade’ teacher they had on Friday. For me, it means that the grade 5s come to me in the morning for attendance and then half of them will go to Mr. Berezowski for the morning. I get those students in the afternoon. This has been a very trying time for all of us. Thank you so much for your patience. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me at slane@sd73.bc.ca
