Here we are rapidly approaching Valentine’s day, the middle of the month mark for February. Some things of note are coming up.
This Friday we go skating (again…if your child does not have skates, please oh please come on in and I’ll show you the cupboard where we keep some. I am definitely not an expert on finding a pair that will fit so I’m leaving it up to your child to say whether they fit or not if I’m the only person with them….). In the afternoon we also have a dance for Valentine’s day. All this week we are collecting for the Food Bank so we hope to have a very full box by Friday afternoon (it is a contest so my competitive side comes out).
We continue on with Extreme Environments in Science. We’ve done the Arctic, Space and now Oceans and next week we’ll move on to Deserts. In Social Studies we are moving on with our mapping unit (which will be done by Spring Break). For Language Arts we are working on our novel study, using expressive words and phrases in writing, and presenting a number of small works for Speaking and Listening. We’ve also been doing some centre work about the Olympics. In Math we are continuing with Geometry. Our Olympic theme continues in P.E. This week we will try the biathlon and luge (not easy to reproduce in a gym let me tell you! We also have skating (okay that one was easy) on Friday so it fits in as well.
Please don’t forget to get your tubing permission slip and money in asap. We go on Friday, Feb. 26.

First week in February and we are only 5 weeks away from Spring Break. Amazing how quickly time flies.
In Science we are carrying on with Extreme Environments. We’ve looked at the arctic and space and this week we’ll look at oceans. In Social Studies we are carrying on with mapping until Spring Break. For Language Arts we are still working on our novel (Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man) , our writing program (Write Traits), and we are incorporating speaking and listening into all other areas of the curriculum. For math we are still working on geometry. The students have learned how to measure angles and now we are moving our way towards triangles and polygons. In HACE we are carrying on with our look at addictions and ways to avoid getting drawn into them.
Thank you for getting all the skating permission forms turned in. Please remember that we go skating on Feb 12th (opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games are the same day) so if your child needs to have skates, we do have some extras here but he or she will need to be fitted for them well in advance. Please come and see me and I’ll show you where we keep the extra skates.
Book orders are due this week by Wednesday. I’ll put the order in as soon as I can on Wednesday morning.
Permission slips for tubing are coming home this week. We don’t go tubing until Feb. 26 but because there is a $10.00 cost, I wanted to get them out early so people have time to get the money together. Please let me know if this presents your family with a hardship. No child in my class will be left behind due to financial issues.
Let’s take a look at this week.

They will only be in the class for a very short time but we will be able to get a photo or two…..

The last week of January has arrived! With it seems to be mild temperatures and not much snow. Not sure what that will do to our booked trip to Harper Mountain at the end of February for tubing. I will optimistically send home field trip forms next week and we’ll hope for the best.
Please don’t forget to send permission slips in for skating. I am still missing about 10 of them. We have extra skates here at the school if your child has outgrown the pair you have at home.
In Math this week we are carrying on with our look at angles. We learned how to classify them last week and now we’re learning how to measure them. For our Novel Study we are already one third of the way through the book. So far the kids have enjoyed this one as we make our way through the storyline. This week we present our posters for HACE on alcohol addiction (done as a group) and we are looking at atlases and answering questions in Social Studies. For our extreme environments topic in Science we looked at what makes ’space’ extreme and now we are setting up for a science experiment on Friday. In P.E. we are still working on basketball skills and we’ll move on to ‘Olympic activities’ next month. For Writing the students have been learning how to write a persuasive speech (which they had to present).
This week we are reading to support fundraising for Multiple Sclerosis. Your child will be bringing home an envelope that needs to come back to the school when the time is up (even if they didn’t participate). On Wednesday, the school will help to support this worthy cause by having a ‘pajama day’ and we’ll be reading in the library. Let’s do our best to support this!

Already in mid January and we are in full swing with all of our units.
In Language Arts we are reading a new novel (Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man) and have finished the first chapter. This week we’re hoping to make it through Chapters 2 and 3. For Writing we are carrying on with highlighting different elements contained in good writing. In Fine Arts the kids have had a great time with discovering ‘melodrama’. Some of the performances have been hilarious! For Math we have been doing long division and then moving on to changing improper fractions to mixed numbers. For Social Studies, we’ve been continuing on with our mapping unit (which will take about 6-8 weeks). In Science we started a unit on extreme environments (ask your child about the movie ‘March of the Penguins’). In HACE we began a unit on substance misuse prevention and that will carry on until Spring Break. P.E. is all about basketball for the next few weeks…..

Whew! We made it! The last week before Christmas. It has been a busy one and this week is no different.
Our schedule is blown to bits due to the Christmas concert practicing. The big event is this Thursday for the intermediates. Afternoon performance at 1:15 and the evening one at 6:30. The doors will open at 6:00. Please oh please kids…….be there at 6:00! I always keep the kids in the class until the concert is over and parents/grandparents etc come to get them.
We have practices scheduled at various times, math squeezed in where we can (learning about plot graphs), and some Christmas writing to do (we’re going to look at the writing ‘formula’ for Christmas stories and then write one ourselves). In addition we’ll be watching a couple of Christmas movies (comparing them to the formula that we discussed).
Somehow in there we’ll also be doing a couple of art lessons, some Christmas language arts ’stuff’ and a gift exchange with the Secret Santa. Oh yes and we’ll be watching the primary concert on Tuesday afternoon when they do their run through.
Boy I’m tired just writing all this! Friday will come up in a hurry and then we get to relax and enjoy family for two weeks.
For the moo days this week, only those students that still have room left on their cards will receive milk, otherwise the moo program will start up again in January.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL BE MAKING GINGERBREAD HOUSES ON FRIDAY DUE TO ANOTHER CLASS HAVING EXTRA MATERIALS TO SHARE. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY DECORATIVE CANDY SO IF YOU WANT IT….YOU’LL HAVE TO BRING IT. OTHERWISE WE’LL JUST USE ICING AND GRAHAM WAFERS.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO OUR ‘FAMILY’ THAT WE SPONSORED. I HAVE 3 BOXES OF FOOD TO DELIVER AND IT WILL SURELY HELP TO MAKE THEIR CHRISTMAS MERRY…….
Monday, Dec. 14 – Moo day, Christmas concert run through
Tuesday, Dec. 15 -Christmas concert run through
Wednesday, Dec. 16 – Moo day, Primary Christmas concert
Thursday, Dec. 17 -Christmas concert day…..
Friday, Dec. 18 – Moo day, ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAYS!!!!
My best wishes to all of you. I will happily see you all in 2010! Just a reminder that I will be joined by Ms. Lauren Helton (student teacher) after the Christmas break and she will be with us until Spring Break. I will still check my e-mail over the holidays so feel free to get in touch with me at slane@sd73.bc.ca

‘Tis the season to be busy and we are no exception. We are in a race towards the end of the 2009 school season (yep when we come back it is indeed 2010!) and it feels like we are falling behind.
Our schedule is blown to bits for these next two weeks because of rehearsals etc so we are trying to do the best we can. I hope everyone received the information about sponsoring a family in need for Christmas. The main message is ‘please don’t feel obligated’. If you would like to help that’s great and if you aren’t able to, that’s okay too.
We are also going to be selling some Christmas ornaments (that we make) to raise money for a charity (I think they’ve chosen the SPCA) so be prepared to hear all about it soon.
We are rapidly making our way through our novel (some power reading going on) and we’ll be watching the movie on Thursday morning.
The other big event this week is a science test on Friday. Everybody should be bringing home their science duotangs in order to study.
Here’s our schedule this week:
Monday, Dec. 7 – Pro-D day, no school for kids
Tuesday, Dec. 8 -choir practice 9:15-10:15
Wednesday, Dec. 9-Moo day, Computer Lab open at lunch
Thursday, Dec. 10-Computer lab at lunch, xmas practice 1:15
Friday, Dec. 11-Moo day, xmas practice 1:15
Please please feel free to get in touch with me anytime at slane@sd73.bc.ca

Well we’re racing our way towards Christmas (yikes! I’m not ready yet!) and our dance for the Christmas concert is coming along (it’s a tough song to dance to so thank goodness the kids are willing to tackle it). We will be doing a ‘Secret Santa’ Christmas exchange so I’ll go over that with the kids this week. There is absolutely no pressure to participate. Anyone who wants to can and anyone who doesn’t want to doesn’t have to.
In math we’ve finished integers (the kids did incredibly well) and we’re moving on to data analysis. In social studies we are carrying on with our short study on Japan. For science we are still working on electricity (the kids have really enjoyed doing experiments) and we’ll be wrapping up before Christmas. In HACE we are still doing a focus on bullying and problem solving but that too will be done by Christmas. For language arts we are trying to finish our novel, continue with our writing program (learning the best traits in writing), and we’ll be looking at writing newspaper articles this week.
Let’s take a look at this week:
Monday, Nov. 30 – Moo day, Xmas concert practice, Computer lab at lunch
Tuesday, Dec. 1 – Junior Business Basics presenter in the a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 2 – Moo day, Computer lab at lunch
Thursday, Dec. 3 -
Friday, Dec. 4 – Moo day, Xmas concert practice, Computer lab at lunch
As always, feel free to contact me at slane@sd73.bc.ca
